The growing influence of Artificial Intelligence on the global media landscape has sparked a cautionary call from a leading Japanese academic.
Speaking at the 3rd JICA Chair Lecture in Accra, Professor HAYASHI Kaori, Executive Vice President of the University of Tokyo, warned that AI poses serious risks to media integrity and democratic values. She urged journalists in Ghana and beyond to adopt firm ethical frameworks when using AI tools.
Adding a local perspective, A senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr. Lloyd George Adu Amoah , advised Ghana to take a measured and critical stance towards AI.
He said Japan, despite its technological advancement, is exercising caution in the adoption of AI to preserve journalistic integrity and cultural values.
Japanese Ambassador to Ghana, YOSHIMOTO Hiroshi, praised the JICA Chair as a platform for intellectual collaboration. He noted that while AI holds promise, countries must balance its risks and rewards.
The JICA Chair, jointly organised by JICA Ghana and the University of Ghana, continues to promote Japanese studies and knowledge-sharing on global development issues.
