The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has launched a major decongestion campaign aimed at clearing street traders from the Central Business District (CBD) in an effort to restore order and enhance sanitation in the city center.
In the early hours of Tuesday, May 20, 2025, AMA task forces, with support from the Ghana Police Service, conducted a coordinated operation to remove makeshift stalls, unauthorized kiosks, and vendors occupying pavements and roadsides in key areas of the CBD.
The AMA stated that the exercise is part of a renewed drive to enforce city bylaws, reduce congestion, and ensure the safe and smooth movement of both pedestrians and vehicles.
The first phase of the operation targets areas surrounding the AMA Head Office, including the stretch from Kinbu Road to Railways, ECG Junction to the King Tackie Tawiah Statue, and from Opera Square through to Adabraka.
