The Eastern South Police Command has arrested a man identified as Coffie Agyemang for allegedly attempting to sell his three-year-old son for GH¢1 million.
The suspect, a resident of Kwamang in the Denkyembour District of the Eastern Region, was arrested following intelligence received by the Akwatia Police.
According to information from the police, residents in the community disclosed that the suspect had confided in a friend about plans to sell his child due to financial difficulties. The information was subsequently relayed to the police, prompting an intelligence-led operation.
Police officers reportedly placed the suspect under surveillance and posed as prospective buyers. During the engagement, an amount of GH¢1 million was allegedly agreed upon.
The suspect was arrested after he reportedly brought the child to a designated meeting point to conclude the transaction.
Another school of taught allege that, the suspect intended for the child to be killed for ritual purposes, after which the body would be returned to him to make it appear that the child had been murdered elsewhere.
Police say these claims form part of ongoing investigations.
Confirming the arrest, the Public Relations Officer of the Eastern South Police Command, DSP David Fianko Okyere, said investigations are underway to establish the full circumstances surrounding the case.
The child has since been placed in protective custody, while the suspect remains in police custody to assist with investigations.
