Ghana has parted ways with head coach Otto Addo, with 72 days remaining until the kickoff of the FIFA World Cup, the country’s football association announced hours after a friendly defeat to Germany.
“The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has parted ways with the head coach of the senior men’s national team, Otto Addo, effective immediately,” the football body said in a statement on Monday.
It gave no further details on a replacement for Otto Addo or the reasons behind his dismissal.
The defeat to Germany in a friendly in Stuttgart marked Ghana’s fifth consecutive loss in friendly matches, having also suffered a 5–1 defeat in Austria on Friday.
A German-born former Borussia Dortmund player, Addo was appointed for a second stint in March 2024 after previously leading the Black Stars at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, where the team exited at the group stage.
Ghana secured a 3–2 victory over South Korea in Qatar but exited the 2022 FIFA World Cup at the group stage following defeats to Portugal and Uruguay.
Under the 50-year-old Otto Addo, Ghana qualified for the upcoming FIFA World Cup in North America. They are set to open their campaign on June 17 against Panama in Toronto and have been drawn in Group L alongside Croatia and England.
However, the four-time Africa Cup of Nations champions failed to qualify for the tournament’s 2025 edition in Morocco—their first absence from the competition in 21 years—despite boasting Premier League players Antoine Semenyo and Mohammed Kudus in their squad.
The dismissal was confirmed in Stuttgart on March 30, 2026.
