The Black Stars of Ghana suffered a 1-0 defeat to Angola’s Palancas Negras in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Group F qualifier at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, Ghana’s second-largest city, on Thursday.

An injury-time goal by Red Star Belgrade’s Philisio Milson secured all three points for the Angolans, silencing more than 20,000 Black Stars fans at the stadium.

Despite Ghana fielding six top players from the English Premier League, Angola played a compact game, leaving little space for the home side to exploit.

The Palancas Negras maintained their composure throughout the match and caught the Ghanaians on the counterattack in the 93rd minute to score the only goal of the game.

Angola’s victory ends Ghana’s 24-year unbeaten streak at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, a venue where many top teams had previously fallen to the Black Stars.

After matchday one, Sudan and Angola both have three points, while Ghana and Niger occupy the third and fourth positions in Group F.

Ghana is set to play its second match of the qualifiers against Niger in Morocco on September 9, while Angola will face Sudan.

Ghana is grouped with Angola, Niger, and Sudan in the 2025 Total Energies AFCON qualifiers.
