Legendary Ghanaian gospel musician and founder of the Asomafo gospel group, Yaw Sarpong, has passed away.

He died on January 20, 2026, in Kumasi at the age of 66. His passing was confirmed by his manager, Nana Poku Ashis, in an interview with Myjoyonline.com. Official details regarding the cause of death are yet to be released.

Yaw Sarpong’s death comes barely a month after the loss of Maame Tiwa, a prominent member and key pillar of the Asomafo music group—an event that profoundly affected the gospel music community.

For several years, the renowned musician had been battling health challenges, which occasionally forced him to step back from public performances as he focused on treatment and recovery.

Widely celebrated as one of the most influential figures in the history of Ghanaian gospel music, Yaw Sarpong rose to national prominence as the leader of Yaw Sarpong and Asomafo. The group played a pivotal role in shaping modern Akan gospel music, earning recognition for its disciplined musical structure and powerful, scripture-based lyrics.

Over the decades, Yaw Sarpong and Asomafo released numerous iconic gospel songs, including Wo Haw Ne Hwan, Tie Obiaa, Aduro Yesu, and Awurade Kasa  many of which remain enduring favourites in churches across Ghana.

In recognition of his immense contribution to gospel music, Yaw Sarpong was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards.
