Legendary gospel musician Maame Tiwaa, celebrated for her decades-long contribution to Yaw Sarpong and the Asomafo, has passed away. She died in the early hours of Sunday, December 7, 2025, after battling an illness for several weeks.

Her passing marks the end of over forty years of impactful music ministry, defined by unwavering dedication, consistency, and a voice that shaped the worship experience of countless Ghanaian gospel music lovers. To many within the industry, Maame Tiwaa was far more than a backing vocalist she was an essential pillar of the distinctive Asomafo sound.

For decades, her powerful harmonies and commanding stage presence beautifully complemented Yaw Sarpong’s lead vocals, helping to shape some of the most memorable and spirit-filled gospel records in Ghana’s music history. Whether in live-band ministry or studio sessions, her delivery was consistently authentic, distinct, and instantly recognisable.

Despite contributing over forty years of dedicated service to the group, many industry observers have long noted that recognition for her work came far too late. Her first major award nomination earlier this year was widely hailed as overdue yet it remained a meaningful acknowledgement of her undeniable impact.
