The National Peace Council (NPC) has strongly condemned a surge in violent incidents across senior high schools in Ghana, describing the pattern of assaults and disruptions as alarming and unacceptable.
In a statement issued on 25 February 2026, the Council expressed deep concern after at least six violent cases involving students were reported within one week across multiple regions.
Among the incidents cited were an assault on a student at Obrachire Senior High School during an athletics meet in the Central Region, a stabbing and an alleged gang rape at events in the Eastern Region, and clashes in the Greater Accra and Cape Coast areas involving students and even attacks on teachers.
The NPC called on the Ghana Education Service (GES), parents and other stakeholders to take urgent steps to restore order, safety and discipline in schools, including strengthening security at sporting and inter-school events.
The Council also supported directives from the Ministry of Education for faster investigations into the cases and emphasised the need for improved counselling services, active parental involvement, and educational programmes on peace and non-violent conflict resolution.
According to NPC, the police have already arrested most suspects involved in the recent violence, but the rising trend underscores broader concerns about student behaviour, discipline and safety in educational environments.
The Peace Council said it will continue its sensitisation efforts in schools and urged all parties to work collaboratively to make senior high schools safe places for learning.
