The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) says it is committed to dealing with illegal mining activities in the country.

According to the GAF, it has made significant progress in curbing illegal mining activities along River Pra within three days of the second phase of its “Operation Halt.”

Speaking to personnel on the field during a visit, Chief of Defence Staff, Vice Admiral Seth Amoama expressed satisfaction at their work.

“I came to visit the troops in the field and deliver a special ‘mission accomplishment’ message for the efforts they have made so far in dealing with this menace of illegal mining, particularly on the water bodies. I am highly satisfied with what they have been able to achieve within 3 days. They have cleared the River Pra all the way from the estuary up to Twifo Praso.”

“The Ghana Armed Forces is ever ready to defend the territorial integrity of the nation”, he added.

President Nana Akufo-Addo, last week, deployed about 200 military personnel to flush out illegal miners destroying water bodies in the country.

A statement from the Information Ministry, which made the announcement, said the team commenced the operation on Wednesday, April 28, 2021, on the River Pra in the Central and Western Regions.

The government recently renewed its commitment to fight illegal mining at a National Consultative Dialogue on Small Scale Mining, where stakeholders charged the government to take steps to strictly apply the country’s mining laws.
