The Minister for Communication, Mrs. Ursula Owusu Ekuful, has cautioned Ghanaians on how they download mobile applications onto their phones, Ipads, computers and other electronic gadgets.

Mrs. Ekuful revealed that, many people downloading applications onto phones and other electronic gadgets without taking their time to read conditions under the application, but will only click on the acceptance or ‘OK’ just to allow the application to be downloaded for use.

She explained that, when people click on the ‘OK’ or acceptance to download, sometimes, some of the conditions are that, by downloading the application, your contacts, videos, pictures, documents and other personal information on that particular gadget, can be copied or access by the manufacturer of such applications, and therefore advised Ghanaians to take their time in reading application agreement or conditions before allowing or accepting or pressing ‘OK’ to avoid your personal information to be viewed by application manufacturers or a third party elsewhere.

The Minister was in Parliament to answer a question filed by the Hon. Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev.John Ntim Fordjour, asking the Minister, what measures the Ministry is putting in place to ensure user privacy protection amidst the report by the wall street journal on July 6th, 2018, that a million units of expensive smartphones sold in developing countries contains preloaded applications that harvest user data without their knowledge.

Adding that, very soon, all mobile phones in the country are going to be registered before it can be used, in other to reduce or do away with the rampant theft or to make it impossible for thieves who steal these gadgets to use or sell them and also every phone that is not registered can never get access to any network here in Ghana.
