Seasoned journalist and Executive Director of Crime Check Foundation (CCF), Ibrahim Oppong Kwarteng has expressed dissatisfaction with Ghana’s approach towards the awareness, and treatment of breast cancer, and has described this as a failure on the part of the nation.
Mr. Kwarteng has passionately called on the government to turn its maximum attention to breast cancer treatment and awareness due to the alarming rate of infections and deaths.
“We need to have a centralized policy that addresses breast cancer issues.
Most people within the poverty bracket do not have enough money for chemotherapy and lack basic education on the eating habits of breast cancer patients.
Government has ignored breast cancer patients and this is unfortunate”, he added
Speaking at the opening of the Meena Breast cancer foundation’s office at Mataheko- Dansoman,Mr. Ibrahim Kwarteng believes there’s a lot the government needs to do to support breast cancer patients in areas of advocacy and some financial support for patients.
Mr. Kwarteng who recounted circumstances that led to the untimely demise of his late wife called for sustained education on breast cancer beyond the month of October.
“The late Mrs. Amina Oppong Kwarteng intended to champion this course on the deadly nature of breast cancer if she had survived but we intend to carry through the vision and send the message down the secondary schools to get girls to self-examine and screen for the disease so they can live to realize their full potential.
We’ve also decided to build a breast cancer clinic at Potsin A.I. Ahmadiyya School because that is where my late wife had her secondary education, but we intend to build at least three more clinics at various locations this year,” he said.
The Meena Breast Cancer Foundation was launched on October 6, 2022, in Accra in memory of Mrs. Amina Oppong Kwarteng, who died of breast cancer on July 18, 2022.
