Flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, yesterday filed nominations at the party’s headquarters at Asylum Down in Accra to contest the flagbearership of the party in November 2023.
Accompanied by a ‘sea of crowd’, who defied the rains, amidst singing and dancing and clad in Kennedy Ohene Agyapong’s T-shirt embossed with inscriptions: ‘Ken for President 2024’ and placards, the supporters cheered him as the next President of Ghana.
Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, who addressed the jubilant supporters among other things, promised to provide the necessary support to all the delegates given the current economic situation they find themselves in.
“Your own has come now, the man who will not just listen to you but will address your plight, especially in providing jobs for many of the youth who have grappled with unemployment for years. I want to assure you of my readiness to ensure that as delegates, I will support you in whichever way I can when I am elected as flagbearer of the NPP and subsequently become the President of the country,” Mr. Agyapong assured.
He also used the opportunity to call on the delegates to ‘propagate’ his message at the various constituencies to other delegates to vote for him, adding that the party can only win the 2024 elections if the grassroots base of the party were strengthened.
So far, he was the second to pull a massive crowd apart from the Vice President, Dr. Bawumia, according to political watchers.
Apart from executives from the various constituencies, former Ghana Football Association (GFA) President, Kwesi Nyantakyi was among some of the leading figures spotted at the NPP office.
Meanwhile, other flagbearer hopefuls who have also filed their nominations include Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Trade and Industry Minister Alan Kyerematen,
Others are former Agric Minister, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, former General Secretary of the NPP, Kwabena Agyapong, former Regional Cooperation Minister, Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku and Kojo Poku, an energy expert.
According to the Director of Elections for the NPP, Evans Nimako, the nomination process which started Friday, May 26, 2023 will close on Saturday, June 24, 2023 while the delegates’ congress is slated for Saturday, November 4, 2023.
