Ghanaian collegiate athletes in the USA delivered impressive performances over the weekend in week 2 as they vied for positions in their indoor conference, national, and international competitions.
Here’s a recap of their noteworthy achievements:
Men’s 60m:
Solomon Hammond set a new personal record (PR) with a swift time of 6.67. Wallace Aframah kicked off his season with a PR of 6.78. •Bossman crossed the finish line in 7.08, and Charles Frimpong followed with 7.29 seconds. Barnabas Aggerh had a solid season opener, clocking in at 6.72.
Women’s 60m:
The women’s 60m event witnessed superb performances from Hor Halutie and Doris Mensah, both achieving personal bests with times of 7.62 and 7.63, respectively.
200m Women:
Grace Obour continued her excellent form with a season-best of 24.36. Rafiatu Nuhu completed the race in 24.75 seconds. Ethel Amissah had a season opener, finishing with a time of 24.86. Benedicta Kwartemaa improved her previous time by running a new PR of 24.93.
Women’s High Jump, Long jump and Triple jump:
• Rose Yeboah, the Ghana national women’s high jump record holder, achieved a remarkable height of 1.84m. • Blessing Samuel and Sakina Umar recorded distances of 5.91m and 5.54m, respectively. • Sakina Umar also notched an impressive 11.47m in the triple jump event. 400m Women: •
In the 400m women’s category, Rafiatu Nuhu completed the race in 56.02 seconds, while Helena Klutsey-Carboo finished in 58.68 seconds.
4x400m Relay:
• Grace Obour and Lovina Ewusi powered Western Texas College to the NJCAA national lead in the 4x400m relay with an outstanding time of 3:45.04. • Joshua Kwame Bour split an impressive 45.36 in the 4x400m relay, contributing to Texas Tech University’s 3rd place finish with a time of 3:05.70.
Men’s 400m:
• Raymond French carried his fine form from Ghana into the US collegiate season, opening with a time of 48.57.
Shot Put and Weight Throw: • Rejoice Agbewodie began her indoor season with an impressive throw distance, achieving a PB of 15.26m. She also recorded a distance of 11.70m in the shot put. • Patience Boahemaa achieved a throw distance of 12.03m in the shot put.
Mid and Long-Distance Races:
• Grace Kombetto competed in the 800m, completing the race in 2:23.97. • In the 1-mile race, N-Vanee Anchike recorded a time of 5:9.49. • Mercy Agaamchaab set a meet record in the 600y with an excellent time of 1:27.20.
