The Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana, is delighted to announce the positive outcome of a meeting between the association, the transport minister and other stakeholders in respect to recent agitations at the Tema Port, over the 100% tariff increment being charged by the Meridian Port Services for cargo handling.

After a 2 days successful meeting with the sector Minister on the 100% cargo handling charges being charged by the Meridian Port Services since the 2nd of December, which was from the 10.9% tariff increment, it was agreed by the Transport Minister who directed the Director General of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority GPHA, Michael Luguje, to as a matter of urgency, direct MPS to do the downwards;

  1. Reduce the 100% tariff increment on Shore Handling charges to 40%
  2. MPS must also desist from charging the 40% shore handling tariff in dollars to Cedis and revert to the 2018 agreement on the shore handling charges.
  3. Double payment for handling charges on Cargo Movement Request CMR to both the MPS and GPHA by the importer must be changed to one time payment. Hence both MPS and GPHA must share the proceeds from the payment
  4. MPS should stop charging upfront payment for Red Channels

The Importers and Exporters Association is pleased to announce it fullest support for such a directive, whiles we look forward to a positive change in the mode of doing business at the Port. We also take the opportunity to commend the Transport Minister, Board Chairman of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, the Director General of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority for their swift response in ensuring the anomalies at the Terminal 3 of the Tema Port are resolved. We also commend our colleagues from other trade associations and that of the entire membership of the Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana, for reposing their faith in us, in ensuring their grievances are addressed.
