DVLA, MTTD to clamp down on fake license plates. The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) will, in the next few weeks, embark upon an exercise to clamp down on vehicles with embellished number plates.
The exercise will be done in conjunction with the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service.
According to a press release issued by management of DVLA, its notice has been drawn to the flagrant disregard to provisions in the Road Traffic Regulation, 2012 (LI 2180) by many vehicle owners.
It said some have embossed wrong insignia, use other nations’ flags in place of the Ghana flag, italicise lettering on the number plates, use colours different from what is prescribed by law and have not fixed the number plates on the front and rear of vehicles.
DVLA noted that the material characteristics of the license plate not only provide a critical unique feature on the vehicle to establish ownership and special identification for compliance with statutory provisions but also include retro-reflectivity and enhances plate visibility thereby providing easy means of distinguishing the registration information of the vehicle.
“It is, therefore, unlawful that these plates should be tampered with.”
It warned that any driver found culpable during the exercise will be made to face the full rigours of the law.
