The Eastern Regional Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has honoured 66 workers, made up of teaching and non-teaching staff to recognize their demonstration of exceptional commitment to excellence and innovation in the region.
The event was part of this year’s World Teachers Day celebration, which was aimed at recognizing the crucial role that teachers and support staff play in guiding students towards a brighter future.
The Eastern Region has a total number of 42,481 education workers, made up of 29,023 teaching and 13,458 non-teaching staff, serving 5,324 basic schools, and 94 Senior High Schools.
In all, 66 exceptional individuals were honoured with awards.
Terkpertey Michael Tetteh, a 40-year-old, Economics Teacher at the Abuakwa State College was crowned the ultimate winner of the 2024 Eastern Regional GES Outstanding Achievement Award and drove home a Toyota Yaris car, donated by Dr.
Kingsley Agyemang, the NPP Parliamentary Candidate for Abuakwa North Constituency.
Other deserving winners also received prizes including deep freezers, laptops, flat-screen TVs, gas cooker burners, and plaques among others.
In his keynote address, a Deputy Minister of Education, Rev. Ntim Fordjour, noted teachers are the backbone of the education system, and play a vital role in inspiring and shaping young minds to become future leaders and change-makers.
Rev. Ntim Fordjour highlighted the performance of students in the 2023 West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in Ghana, which he said is a testament to the hard work and dedication of teachers.
He assured that the government through the GES will continue to support and empower them to deliver quality education and improve student outcomes.
Eastern Regional Director of GES, Mrs. Ivy Asantewaa Owusu, underscored the significance of recognizing the exceptional contributions of teachers, whom she said are instrumental in driving positive change and fostering a brighter future for generations to come.
Mrs. Owusu acknowledged the challenges teachers encounter in remote and underserved areas but encouraged them to embrace their postings with optimism and assured them that GES recognizes their commitment, and will continue to provide motivation and support to them.
In an interview with the media, Terkpertey Michael Tetteh the most outstanding teacher was overwhelmed with joy.
He expressed his gratitude to the government for recognizing the hard work and dedication of teachers, the Eastern Regional Education Directorate for their tireless efforts in promoting excellence in education, and the sponsors of this award for their kind gesture and support.
