The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has officially declared Ernest Kumi from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as the winner of the Akwatia parliamentary race, following a protracted and highly contentious electoral process. Kumi secured 19,269 votes, while his main opponent, Henry Yiadom Boakye of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)**, received17,206 votes.
The declaration was made after several challenges that delayed the finalization of the results. Initially, the collation process in the Eastern Region faced multiple setbacks, with both logistical issues and disputes over electoral irregularities. As a result, the final collation of results for Akwatia (along with other constituencies like Suhum, Nsawam, and Fanteakwa North was relocated to the National Police Training School in Tesano, Accra, to ensure transparency and security in a neutral setting.
While the move to Accra was aimed at ensuring a peaceful and controlled environment for the completion of the electoral process, it drew mixed reactions. Supporters of the NPP welcomed the decision as a step toward a fair process, while the NDC criticized it, arguing that the move disenfranchised local party agents and questioned the credibility of the results.
Despite the tension, the EC has confirmed Ernest Kumi’s victory, though the decision may still face legal challenges or further scrutiny, depending on the outcome of any ongoing disputes.
