The emergency summit of ECOWAS leaders on the political situations in Guinea and Mali has commenced at the Kempinski Hotel in Accra.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo who is hosting the summit as the Chairman of the sub-regional body opened the meeting, giving a brief background of the political impasses in Guinea and Mali.

The authority of ECOWAS has been under the spotlight recently due to the spate of military takeovers in the sub-region.

Earlier this month, Col Mamady Doumbouya, head of the Guinean Special Forces forcibly annexed power from President Alpha Condé accusing him of among others economic mismanagement and unconstitutional extension of power.

In Mali, Lt col Assimie Goita who also overthrew the govt last year has also set aside the civilian transition govt he put in place to return the country to democracy.

Guinea and Mali have been suspended from the ECOWAS and the African Union for their respective coup d’etats.
A communique will be issued after the summit detailing the next steps of the sub-regional body.
