Fabian Schar has signed a one-year contract extension with Newcastle United through until the summer of 2026.

The 33-year-old centre-back has made the most Premier League appearances of any Newcastle player since Eddie Howe arrived as head coach in November 2021 and remains a mainstay of the XI.

A former Switzerland international, Schar’s previous deal was set to expire during the summer, but negotiations with his camp had been ongoing over the past few months and a 12-month extension has now been signed.

Schar, who joined from Deportivo La Coruna in 2018, said: “I’m buzzing to extend my stay here. It’s been a very good few weeks for everybody at Newcastle United after winning the Carabao Cup and I’m really happy now to sign another contract with this amazing club.

“It’s my seventh season here and everybody knows how happy I am at the club and how comfortable I feel in the city, so I’m really glad to be continuing that. Now it’s about looking forward and finishing the season as strong as possible.”
