France will lock horns with Portugal in the quarter-finals of the Euro 2024. The game will be played at Hamburg’s Volkparkstadion this Friday at 9pm CET.
Portugal defeated Slovenia in a nail-biting but goalless last-16 that went to penalties, for the first time in this tournament. Roberto Martinez’s team eventually prevailed with FC Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa proving essential to his side’s qualification in stopping all three Slovenia attempts. Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva made no mistakes from the spot in the shoot-out to set up a mouth-watering quarter-final with France.
France will face Portugal with a berth in the Euro 2024 semi-finals, against either Spain or Germany, up for grabs. It will be the third consecutive Euros in which Les Bleus will cross the path of the Seleçao. In 2016, Fernando Santos’ team spoiled France’s party by defeating the hosts in their backyard in the final (0-1). In the Euros 2021, France and Portugal shared the spoils in the group stage with Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema both scoring braces (2-2). On Friday, only one team will win.
