The Greater Accra Sustainable and Livelihood Improvement Project (GASSLIP) under the auspices of the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources has organised a day orientation workshop for all the Metropolitan, Municipal Chief Executives (MMCEs) in the Greater Accra region.

The objective of the workshop is to facilitate the implementation of the GASSLIP project and to build the capacities of the MMCEs in waste management and adopt innovative ways of cleaning the cities.
In her opening remarks, the Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Abena Dapaah said the workshop marks an important milestone in the preparation works for the implementation of the GASSLIP project.

According to her, the ministry in partnership with the MMDAs are working closely in addressing the sanitation challenges as a result of which GASSLIP must increase its access to safe and sustainable sanitation to the residents of the Greater Accra Metropolitan Assembly (GAMA) targeting the urban and peri-urban poor residents.

The project is estimated to cost US$53.86 million of which the African Development Bank contribution was US$48.85 million with a remaining amount of US$5.01 million for government since the project will benefit 1.9 million residents under GAMA.

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Ishmael Ashitey urged the MMCEs to make adequate inputs in the implementation process adding the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) will ensure that the GASSLIP project takes off successfully.

For his part, the Metropolitan Chief Executive for Adentan, Nii-Noi Adumuah commended government for setting up the sanitation ministry and said that all growing cities like Ghana have sanitation challenges and should therefore be supported.

A representative for the African Development Bank, Bocar Cisse said the bank have shown tremendous support in addressing sanitation challenges in the country and committed to work with government and all stakeholders to achieve government’s vision in making Accra the cleanest city.
