Ghana’s parliament has joined the rest of the world to mark the international day for United Nation Peacekeepers.
In reading a statement on the floor of parliament to commemorate the celebration, the Deputy Minister for Defence, Hon. Derek Oduro congratulated all peacekeepers both civilians and uniformed personnel especially the Ghanaian Peacekeepers for their sacrifice and contribution to world peace.
According to the Minister, this years celebration acknowledges the difficulties our peacekeepers are going through in the face of the novel coronovirus pandemic COVID-19.
He said, the theme for this year’s celebration is “Women in Peacekeeping A key to Peace”. The appropriateness of this theme cannot be over emphasized. The role of women in ensuring peace at home, the work place and in the community is something we as citizens of the world should endeavour to promote to ensure our continue existence.
Mr Oduro stated that, twenty years ago, the United Nations Security Council adopted resolution 1325 on women, peace and security which together with ensuing resolutions have led to greater roles by women within the operations of the United Nations and now we have more uniformed female peacekeepers than before.
Further, the Minister revealed that, since 29 May 1948, when the United Nations Security Council authorized the deployment of the first military observers in the Middle East, we have had more than one million women serving in various capacities in 72 United Nations Peacekeeping Operations. Their contributions in these missions have positively impacted the lives of millions of people across the globe.
” May we therefore use this occasion to pay glowing tribute to our women peacekeepers for their role as mothers and partners in our quest for world peace.”
