The Minister for Works and housing, Francis Asenso-Boakye has revealed that government is in the process of introducing a national rental scheme that will help provide rent advances for renters on payroll to be able to pay for their rent.

He added that section twenty-five of the rent Act, 1963 at 220 does not allow landlords to take more than six months of rent advance but the issue has turned the opposite way where landlords are now charging between one and two years, and sometimes even three years or more.

The sector minister did indicate that the ministry is in process of submitting the rent control Act to Parliament for review and amendment in order to handle the current issues on rent in the country.

The Minister explained to Parliament, that due to the high deficit of housing in the country, landlords are taking advantage of the situation by charging more than the what the laws permit, therefore the ministry of works and housing through the rent control department has been addressing petitions received from tenants and landlords for settlement including sensitization programs for landlords.
