The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have announced the temporary shutdown of several thermal power plants in Tema. This move comes as part of ongoing maintenance activities and adjustments in the country’s power generation and distribution system.
The shutdown is expected to impact electricity supply in the region, with the two companies advising consumers to prepare for potential disruptions. GRIDCo, the operator of the national transmission network, emphasized that the move is necessary to ensure the long-term stability and reliability of the grid.
Reasons for the Shutdown:
Maintenance and Upgrades: The thermal plants in Tema, which play a significant role in meeting the country’s power demand, require scheduled maintenance to improve their efficiency and prevent future breakdowns.
Grid Stability: Regular maintenance of power plants is crucial for maintaining the stability of the national grid and avoiding unexpected outages.
Impact on Consumers:
Power Interruptions: Consumers in the affected areas may experience periodic power outages as the plants are taken offline.
Demand Management: GRIDCo and ECG are expected to implement measures to manage demand and minimize the impact of the shutdown on residential and industrial users.
Response and Mitigation:
Both GRIDCo and ECG have assured the public that they are working to restore normal operations as quickly as possible. They have also advised consumers to use electricity sparingly during this period to reduce strain on the remaining power generation sources.
This announcement is part of broader efforts to maintain a reliable power supply across the country, ensuring that the national grid can continue to meet the demands of households and industries in the long term.
GRIDCo and ECG have expressed optimism that WAPCo will soon resolve the operational challenge affecting its Tema Regulatory & Metering Station and restore gas supply to the thermal plants.
In their joint statement, issued on December 12, the companies assured the public that once gas supply resumes, power supply will be fully restored to all affected customers. Both GRIDCo and ECG apologized for the inconvenience caused by the ongoing disruptions, acknowledging the impact on consumers.
They emphasized their commitment to promptly addressing the issue and thanked customers for their patience as they work to resolve the shortfall in power supply.
