The managing editor of the Insight newspaper Kwesi Pratt Jr. has lambasted the current government for its excessive use of convoys, describing it as a blatant display of opulence and waste.

Speaking at the 12th President John Evans Atta Mills commemorative lecture, Pratt Jr. expressed dismay at the long convoys that often accompany political leaders, stating that they have become a symbol of extravagance and a drain on the nation’s resources.

In contrast, Pratt Jr. praised the late President Atta Mills for his humility and simplicity, recalling how he used small cars and minimal convoys during his tenure. According to Pratt, Atta Mills’ modest approach was a refreshing departure from the usual pomp and circumstance associated with political leadership in Ghana.

Pratt Jr. urged the current government to take a cue from Atta Mills’ example and adopt a more modest approach, emphasizing that the resources spent on convoys could be better utilized to address the country’s pressing needs. He argued that the excessive use of convoys is not only a waste of resources but also a hindrance to the country’s development.

“Atta Mills’ small convoys were a testament to his commitment to simplicity and humility,” Pratt Jr. said. “He showed us that leadership is not about pomp and circumstance but about serving the people. It’s time for our leaders to emulate his example and focus on the real issues that matter”, Pratt Jr. said.
