The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has asked constituency chairmen of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to remain united and maintain the unity of the party as a whole.
That, he said would make it possible for the party to be strategically positioned to retain power at the 2024 general elections.
He stated that it was only by retaining power that, the party would be able to continue with its good works to make life worth living for Ghanaians.
The Vice-President made these remarks in an address read on his behalf by a former National First Vice-Chairman of the party, Mr. Fred Oware at the inauguration of the party’s welfare fund steering committee and workshop at Koforidua.
According to the Vice-President, the constituency chairmen had taken a laudable initiative and called for the roping in of polling stations executives of the party to generate enough funds to cater to many members of the party in distress.
Dr. Bawumia who indicated that he would contribute to the fund added that many members of the party had been working tirelessly for it at the base who helped it in diverse ways.
The scheme will have life insurance cover for the officers and their dependants and is expected to strengthen the party’s base to make it possible for them to break the eight.
Several people over the years have suffered different forms of violent attacks with some even losing their lives as a result of working for their various political parties.
In most times these victims of political activities are left to their own faith including their families in the unfortunate event of death. It is against these sad and demotivating factors that constituency chairpersons in the New Patriotic Party have inaugurated welfare to cater to the constituency officers and their dependants to encourage them to continue working hard for the party to help them achieve, the break the eight agenda.
Speaking on behalf of the Vice president, Mr. Fred Oware urged constituency chairpersons to explore ways to rope in polling station officers and other people who have been sacrificing for the party at the base.
He however pledged his unflinching support for welfare.
The National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Freddy Blay described the move as a historic and laudable one.
He said welfare should not be considered as a way to undermine the party’s hierarchy but rather to complement the effort of the party.
He used the opportunity and appealed to the constituency chairpersons to closely collaborate and work with Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives to help the government succeed.
The Chairman of the NPP Officers Welfare Group Dr. Akyea Darkwah said welfare is long overdue and that, the establishment the welfare will help make the base of the party stronger, they will be motivated to work hard for the party.
He observed that, if the party will be able to break the eight, there are certain things they must do, by first working hard to ensure that, the party becomes the most dominant and stronger party in the country.
