Residents and commuters of Accra west will soon heave a sigh of relief after sod was cut for the construction of the Obetsebi Lamptey interchange with other ancillary projects. The $135 million interchange will replace the current roundabout which has outlived its usefulness and currently not fit for purpose.
With recent flooding at the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange and other flood prone areas in Accra in perspective, Hon. Kwasi Amoako Attah, the Minister for Roads and Highways assured residents and commuters that the new design for the 3 tier interchange will reduce flooding around the interchange and its environs when completed.
The perennial flooding that torments the Okaikoi sub metro area, according to the Minister, will be tackled with drains being constructed at all intersections on and around the interchange.
These were disclosed when the Minister gave further details of the interchange project at the sod cutting ceremony by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Monday.
Kwasi Amoako Attah gave an insight to the details of the project, when he addressed the the public at the sod cutting event.
On the drainage system which may be affected, the minister enumerated some areas which will see drainage works being undertaken with the project.
He assured all that the Ministry will do well to ensure value for money.
The Spanish Ambassador to Ghana, Alicia Rico Perez del Pulgar mentioned that the interchange will be a key intercession and the road network of Accra which is very burden by daily traffic.
With the Obetsebi-Lamptey Circle recording a peak hour traffic volume of approximately eight thousand (8,000) vehicles per hour, with a Level of Service (LOS) of F at peak periods, Government has decided to construct a three-tier interchange at the Obetsebi-Lamptey Circle, to address the situation, with the first phase being completed in 18 months.
