The objective of the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council to ensure the capital city is clean and green was kicked into action on Tuesday when the & Operation Clean Your Frontage exercise commenced at various municipalities within the region.
About 3,500 people are expected to be deployed in Accra to engage in a massive clean-up campaign.
The policy by the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council seeks to, among other objectives, make it obligatory for all individuals and corporate entities to be responsible for the cleaning and greening of their immediate surroundings.
The necessary by-laws have been passed and gazetted by the 29 Assemblies in the Region to enable the lawful implementation of the initiative.
The Government last year launched the Operation Clean Your Frontage in Accra towards making the national capital the cleanest city in Africa.
Over 3,500 people have been deployed to implement sanitation by-laws under the initiative.
Led by the regional minister, Henry Quartey, participants of the campaign converged at Independence Square to be deployed in buses to the various districts.
In some parts of the capital, some residents who were relieved and happy expressed their support for the exercise.
But it was not all rosy for the task force as there was a near clash between them and traders at Circle during the enforcement of sanitation by-laws as part of the exercise.
Traders at Maame Dokuno – VVIP enclave protested their eviction by the Greater Accra Regional Minister, bringing the exercise to a halt momentarily.
A bulldozer, deployed to demolish some illegal structures had its windscreen smashed, compelling the driver to retreat.
Later in an interaction with the press, Henry Quartey who is also a member of parliament for Ayawaso Central cautioned that illegal activities will not be condoned and the actions of squatters would not deter the exercise from progressing.
