The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has emphasized the necessity for increased efforts towards dealing with the disturbing security situation in the Sahel.

A situation he bemoans as not only confirmed to the Sahel, but President Akufo also-Addo said it remains a nightmare that the resolve of the Jihadist insurgents in the Sahel is focused on reaching the coast and linking up with pirates operating with the Gulf of Guinea.

It is to avert this, that finding the means and working towards how to resolve the security situation in the Sahel have become a “major security preoccupation of our country and indeed of the ECOWAS region generally.”

President Akufo-Addo was interacting with the Deputy Secretary of the United States, Kurt M. Campbell, who led a delegation from the US Department of State and the US Embassy to pay a courtesy call on the President at the Jubilee House in Accra, on Monday 15th July, 2024.

He appreciated profoundly the support and assistance that the United States, has traditionally given and continues to give to Ghana, through the Electoral Commission and other institutions as part of efforts to manage a credible electoral process.

He said, identical to the situation in America, Ghana is also gearing towards the polls come December this year. “We are entitled to two terms, citizens of Ghana, to the presidency and I’m coming to the end of my second term. So, a new President must be elected; the same with our Parliament.”

“We share many common aspirations. Ghana is a very thriving democracy. Many of its institutions have been influenced by America’s history and democratic journey, and we’re determined to keep it so,” he added.

Deputy Secretary of State, Kurt M. Campbell, has a longstanding history with Ghana, having once served as a board member of Standard Chartered and is noted for facilitating and negotiating the arrival of the Liverpool Football team to Ghana in 2014 and 2015.
