The Electoral Commission (EC) has said that the ballot papers found on one Salim Abubakar at New Zongo in the Asawase Constituency were in fact not ballot papers belonging to the commission.
Salim Abubakar was arrested before he had the chance to stuff ballot boxes with five (5) already thumb-printed ballot papers and remains in police custody for attempting to commit an electoral offence.
Mr Benjamin Bannor Bio, the Ashanti Regional Director of the EC said in a press conference that following the arrest, EC upon examining the ballot papers in Abubakar’s possession found that they were ordinary papers which did not bear serial numbers or have the EC’s verification stamps.
He said the EC promptly followed up on the matter because it has determined to ensure an incident-free election.
“When we got the ballot papers, we realised that those ballot papers that were found on that voter were not that of the electoral commission. It was something that somebody might have printed to use to discredit the electoral process.”
He asked the general public to trust in the EC’s process which is designed to ensure that the results which will be declared will be a true reflection of the decision of voters.
