Nico Williams has been selected for the Spanish national team under-21s ahead of the two upcoming 2023 European Under-21 Championship qualifiers.

The 19-year-old joined the youth academy of Athletic Bilbao in 2013 and earned a promotion with the  Athletic Bilbao B on 11 May 2020.

Williams made his professional debut with the Athletic senior side as a second-half substitute in a 2–2 La Liga draw against Real Valladolid on 28 April 2021.

His call-up comes after his outstanding performance with Spain’s  U18 team scoring two goals in four matches.

The Spanish team has been drawn against Russia, Slovakia,  Northern Ireland, Lithuania, and Malta in Group C.

Luis de la Fuente’s side will face Russia at the Estadio Francisco de la Hera in Almendralejo on September 3 at 20:45 CEST.

The second match will take place in Vilnius on September 7, where the Spain team will play against Lithuania at the LFF Stadium (kick-off at 18:30 local time).

The four Lions will meet up with their teammates in Madrid on August 30.

The 24th edition of the 2023 UEFA U-21 Championship will be  hosted by Romania and Georgia.
