Nigeria has been eliminated from the ongoing FIFA Women’s Cup tournament in Australia after suffering defeat to England.

The Super Falcons showed grit throughout the game but were unable to cruise to victory in the Round 16 clash as they exit the tournament.

Despite creating numerous goalscoring opportunities, both teams were unable to find the back of the net in regular time. The much-anticipated clash traveled to extra-time after a pulsating goalless draw.

England were reduced to ten after Lauren James was sent off for an off-the-ball incident, five minutes to full time but the West African powerhouse couldn’t secure victory.

With no goal after extra time, the highly-competitive clash had to be decided on penalties, where England emerged as winners with a 4-2 win.

Nigeria is the latest African country to be eliminated from the Round of 16 after South Africa. The Banyana Banyana suffered a 2-0 defeat to the Dutch on Sunday despite showing grit throughout the game.

Africa’s hope now hinges on debutants, Morocco who play France on Tuesday, August 8 in the round 16.
