Ghana, yesterday, started another process that could result in Nigeria not qualifying for another major football championship when the Black Galaxies defeated CHAN Eagles 2-0 in Cape Coast.

It was the first leg of the last qualifier for the African Nations Championship, which will give the winner over two legs a ticket to play at the continental competition in Algeria, next year.

Recall that Ghana eliminated Nigeria from the race to the Qatar 2022 World Cup, when the Black Stars drew goalless with the Super Eagles in the same Cape Coast and managed a 1-1 draw in Abuja to eliminate Nigeria on away goals rule.

After an evenly-balanced first period, during which goalkeeper Adeyinka Adewale quickly redeemed himself after dropping the ball with a Ghanaian forward lurking, Afriye Barnieh shot the Galaxies ahead in the 50th minute from the penalty spot as Beninoise referee, Issa Mouhamed, punished a Nigerian infringement in the 18-yard box.

Ghana kept attacking and with five minutes remaining, Umar Bashiru sent a through pass to Korsah, who fed Abagna and the RTU attacker sent in a cross, which was met by Suraj for Ghana’s second goal.

The result leaves the Super Eagles B with some work to do ahead of the return leg, as both teams square off again at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abuja on Saturday evening.
