The Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources under the auspices of the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area (GAMA) Sanitation and Water Project has signed a contract agreement for the construction of simplified sewerage projects to serve residents of Ashaiman New Town and TDC Quarters in the Ashaiman Municipality and the Bankuman community in the Tema Municipality.

The project funded by the world bank seeks to clear the deficit in household toilets and bring an end to open defecation in these areas. The 8 months project under contract sum of GH¢20.7 million will commence in March, 2020 and ready in November this year, and will target a total of 4,805 households as 37,500 persons to be connected to the system when completed.

Ing. George Asiedu who is the Coordinator Director with GAMA gave an account on why government is burnt on improving low income community and expected to expand Nationwide if successfully done.

At the signing ceremony in Accra, the Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Abena Dapaah said the gesture falls in line with government vision in making Greater Accra free from open defecation.

The sector minister also said the ministry is working fervently to clear the deficit on household toilets which also ties into the clean Ghana campaign. She added that the liquid and solid waste when treated properly could be used for agricultural and other commercial purposes.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ashaiman Municipality, Albert Boakye Okyere said open defecation would be a thing of the past and also assured affected households of adequate compensation during the construction.
