Two suspected robbers have been killed while four others have been arrested for their alleged involvement in some robberies and killings along the Kintampo-Buipe-Tamale Highway.

Police have also said preliminary investigations suggest that these suspects were behind many robberies including the killing of an international journalist, Syed Taaley Ahmed, who was working with a crew from the London-based Muslim TV.

According to police, the two slain robbers, identified as Hamidu Umaru and Haadu, were killed after a gun battle with the Police Intelligence and Operational teams.

The suspects detained have been identified as Saaju Bukari, Rector Saabi, All Amadu and Isaac Seidu.

The Intelligence-led operations by the Special Anti-Robbery Task Force led to the retrieval of 2 locally manufactured pistols and live cartridges, machetes, bayonets, pepper spray cans and stun guns.

Some suspected stolen items were retrieved and they include mobile phones and motorbikes,” police said in a statement.

The Police administration said it has instituted some rigorous measures to effectively combat serious crimes that have plagued the area over the past few years.

The insecurity in that area prompted a statement from former President John Mahama’s office.

“The now rampant criminal activity of armed robbers in the northern parts of the country is a cause for great concern, as they are fast becoming a daily occurrence. In recent times, these armed robbers have become so emboldened that they not only terrorize road users in the night but in the daytime as well,” it said.

Mr. Mahama’s office called on the government to take urgent steps to address “the deteriorating security situation in the country.”
