President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has appealed to the Ghanaian media fraternity to join in the crusade and fight against the threats of the Novel Coronavirus disease.

The viral outbreak which has been classified as a pandemic by the WHO, has now touched down in the West African sub region with 2 cases recorded in Nigeria and Burkina Faso, and One case each for Cote D’ivoire and Togo, all close neighbours to Ghana.

In a presidential address to the nation on Wednesday evening, President Akufo-Addo urged the local media to help inform and educate the populace on the outbreak while cautioning them to be wary of unhelpful messages and seek approval from the health authorities.

President Akufo-Addo used the occasion to also appeal to event organizers to put in place cautionary and preventive steps and measures, urging all Ghanaians to observe high standards of basic personal hygiene.

The President said in light of the pandemic, necessity is the mother of invention and said the nation must take advantage of the situation to strengthen the nation’s domestic reliance on foreign imports.

The novel coronavirus outbreak is reported to have affected over 118,000 persons worldwide, with over 4000 deaths recorded.

The viral infection first broke out in the Chinese city of Wuhan, in the Hubei province. The pandemic has caused many interruptions in business with the economic impact running into billions of dollars.

The worst hit sectors globally include tourism, trade, education and sports. China, Iran and Italy have been some of the hardest hit countries with the entire Italian nation on lockdown.

Ghana as at the time of this story has not yet recorded any positive outcomes after tests on 57 suspected cases.
